English Eccentrics – Saturday 25th March 2017

There have always been musical eccentrics, particularly in England. So sure of their path, they follow it despite the moods and fashions of the day.

This Record Club applauds and gives an outlet to those eccentrics. The ones who keep on doing their own thing. And keep on keeping on. And don’t even notice that nobody else seems to be doing it like them.

So three English cheers for the ones who are not afraid to be themselves! Even if others feel that they have become a little bit, you know, weird.

This event has been put together by RC regular Darren, who did such a fine job with the At The Movies night back in November 2015. Details remain firmly under wraps but we are promised a selection of records by said eccentrics (check out the image above for clues). There will also be room for you to play your own choices so bring along your own English Eccentric vinyl for a spin.

The usual rules apply. The decks switch on at 8pm at the Kirkgate Centre. £3 entrance donation to cover costs, cash & card bar and dazzling company (i.e. you).

See you there!

Pop Up! Friday 17th February 2017

For February’s event we are a week earlier than usual and in a different venue. Confused?

Nah, thought not. Not that hard really.

So, we’re popping up at our old friends The Triangle at 47, Bradford Road, Shipley. We spent a great evening there in September as part of or Saltaire Festival Pop Up event so we thought we’d do it again. And fortunately The Triangle agreed.  Could have been awkward otherwise.

This one is a free play night so bring along whatever you fancy, spin it on the pre-loved decks (or ask someone to do it for you) and enjoy great music, glittering company and a range of outstanding beers (non-beers also available).

No entrance fee for this one (but unlike Club Tropicana, the drinks aren’t free)
See you at 8pm on 17th February.

Charity Shop Finds – 24th September 2016

screen-shot-2016-06-24-at-21-00-12

We’ve noticed at most of the Record Club events over these past… ooh 5 years or so, how few of the fantastic records played were acquired at a charity shop. A few years ago you couldn’t move in your local Oxfam for crates of unwanted Technotronic 12″ singles, Brothers in Arms albums, Marching Band boxsets and tatty Dance Party ’81* (*”does not feature original artists“) which might of course help to explain why we never…. Saltaire Festival Pop-Ups – 10th September 2016

Saltaire Festival pop-ups September 2016Saltaire is ace.

Just as the leaves start to turn brown and think about causing all kinds of railway related problems, the village decides to wring the final drop of summer out of the first weeks in September and throws a massive festival.

There’s music, food, comedy, stalls selling all manner of curiosities, bouncy castles, free tours of the fire station, and a general feeling of village-wide bonhomie, and this year, on the first Saturday of the whole shindig, there’s us…! 3 Little Letters – 25th June 2016

3littleletters
The June event is based round the theme of three little letters.

How many bands, artists, songs and albums of you know which consist of just three letters? When we discussed it we realised that there are, frankly, loads! So we’ll have a night of them.

Rob is picking up one of the album choices for this one. Along with an album vote for the second one (please bring along your choice to add to the voting pile!) there will also be plenty of room for free play choices from everybody else. Here is what Rob has chosen… Continue reading 3 Little Letters – 25th June 2016

Sampled – 30th April 2016

We dedicate this month to the the art of sampling and being sampled. For years musicians have experimented with using tape and records to loop music as part of their own composition but it was the advent of disco, hip hop and electronic dance music which brought it into the mainstream. Despite criticism from some circles that it lacks the creativity of “real music” it is now such an established tool in the studio and for live performance that it is hard to deny the positive impact it has had on modern music.

This month we welcome Steve Goodall who has selected an hour’s worth of material to play for us. He’s keeping his selections tightly under wraps for the time being, so make sure you get there in good time to hear his set.

We’ll also be playing an album which but would like your help to choose it. So we’ll be having a vote… Continue reading Sampled – 30th April 2016

Live in Shipley – Saturday 26th March 2016

Screen Shot 2016-03-06 at 16.11.16Live albums, eh. As artists become increasingly reliant on their live shows to bring in the cash a live album is the next best thing for hard up music fans who miss out thanks to rapidly increasing ticket prices and “secondary market entrepreneurs”.

But they’re tricky purchases even for the committed music fan. For every Nirvana Unplugged or The Who Live at Leeds there’s Having Fun With Elvis on Stage (just the talky bits from Elvis at various concerts… as an album) or Vanilla Ice Extremely Live.  Continue reading Live in Shipley – Saturday 26th March 2016

Gurgles – Saturday 27th February 2016

For our next event we are delighted to welcome Bradford-based band Gurgles as hosts for the evening. They will be choosing the records they love and that have influenced their own, unique sound. We’re also hoping that the band will join us for our March edition of the Record Club radio show on BCB Radio.

Screen Shot 2016-02-05 at 19.07.29Gurgles describe themselves as “Bradfordprogpop” and features Gus Bousfield (also of Mucky Sailor, ex of Nope and the writer of a myriad of music for tv and radio), Nanette Brimble and Bradley Cunningham… Continue reading Gurgles – Saturday 27th February 2016
