The Literary Connection Saturday 2nd July 2022

This month we explore the connections between music and literature. Paul will be taking the reins and playing, in full, Song of Innocence by David Axelrod, his 1968 debut and with links to William Blake’s collection of poems Songs of Innocence.

He’ll also be playing at least one side of Scritti Politti’s melting pot of politics, linguistics and philosophy Songs to Remember and The (mighty) Fall’s This Nation’s Saving Grace, with its own links to Anthony Burgess and Fritz Leiber.

And in between all those there’ll be space to play your own literary linked choices, so bring some of your own vinyl to play too. Or just come along and have a listen.

We’ll be starting uptairs at The Triangle at 8pm sharp(ish) and putting a brake on the wheels of steel around 11pm. There’s great drinks available downstairs at The Triangle and great company and music upstairs. A proper decent night out. See you there!

HI! How are you?

Well, it’s been a few months since we were last able to meet up at The Triangle and it’s still not clear when we can do so again. While we have had to cancel our regular monthly events for now plus the final two of our 2020 Record Fairs we have tried to stay busy where and when we can. Here’s one or two things that have been going on…

The Lockdown Listens series on our social media channels continues, with RC regulars posting what they have been listening to these past few months. We’d love to hear your thoughts by commenting on the posts and if you want to share your own list then let us know.

We’re S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G…

Two Record Club regulars have been busy setting up and stocking online shops to sell their creations.

If you’ve ever seen our poster designs then you’ll have come across the work of Andy Mitchell (Custard4Gravy). His latest activity moves away from those digital creations into much more traditional, tactile and beautiful hand made lino cut prints, all ready for framing and available to purchase from his shop. You can also find Andy’s book of The Record Club poster archive available to buy too.

Meanwhile Anne-Marie White (Clocktower Studios) was so missing getting out and about to visit all her favourite record shops that she decided to draw them all instead. You can find prints of the shops, badge designs and her new BD18 themed Christmas cards among the items available at Anne-Marie’s website. And you may find some stocked in the record shops featured in the series.

RADIO!

The regular Record Club Radio Show on BCB Radio also continues uninterrupted on Tuesday nights at 9pm, presented every four weeks by Rob and Will from the Record Club’s top secret recording facilities. You can hear the latest show, part 1 of our 1990 special, by clicking the link below.

To listen to future shows (next one is 17th November) tune in to BCB on 106.6FM around Bradford, bcbradio.co.uk anywhere in the world, on various internet radio connected devices (probably your kettle) or visit our Mixcloud page where archive all the past 70+ shows for your ongoing listening pleasure. More details also on our Radio! page. And a special shout out to the ace folk at BCB for their amazing work keeping the station going this year.

And if that’s not enough radio for you, may we recommend The Tipping Point, also on BCB Radio and presented by RC stalwart Tony Painter.

The Host With the Most

Finally, we must mention our wonderful monthly event hosts The Triangle, who throughout the last few months have remained open to provide Shipley and the wider community the very finest choices in beer, cider, cheese… Pop in, say hello and treat yourself.

For now, stay safe, look after yourselves and each other and we’ll see you soon (ish).

Pop-up at Record Café Sunday 25th November

We do love a good pop-up from time to time and have been promising to do this one for ages.

Recently celebrating it’s fourth birthday serving the finest in beers, charcuterie and vinyl, the Record Café is understandably a popular haunt for many a Record Clubber. So we were chuffed to be able to put this Sunday afternoon pop-up together.

The usual pop up rules apply. Turn up with some of your favourite vinyl and take turns to spin it for everyone’s entertainment. This time it’ll be a relaxed, Sunday afternoon vibe, ideal for winding down after some early Christmas shopping or just avoiding the Sunday lunch washing up…

Things get going from 1pm and we’ll look to wrap up by 5.30pm. Hope you can join us!

Gurgles – Saturday 27th February 2016

For our next event we are delighted to welcome Bradford-based band Gurgles as hosts for the evening. They will be choosing the records they love and that have influenced their own, unique sound. We’re also hoping that the band will join us for our March edition of the Record Club radio show on BCB Radio.

Screen Shot 2016-02-05 at 19.07.29Gurgles describe themselves as “Bradfordprogpop” and features Gus Bousfield (also of Mucky Sailor, ex of Nope and the writer of a myriad of music for tv and radio), Nanette Brimble and Bradley Cunningham… Continue reading Gurgles – Saturday 27th February 2016

Record Club at The Movies – 28th November 2015

Record Club at the Movies
With some very high profile cinematic releases happening over the next few months, we thought it was high time that Record Club went  to the movies.  After all, Bradford *is* the first UNESCO City of Film and has a proud cinematic heritage. We also share our home with the fine Shipley Film Society. There really was no excuse!
