Colours – Saturday 6th October 2018

Colours_RC

Colours, eh. Kind of important. Otherwise, how would we know when to stop, when to go, when your enemy has surrendered, when to get really cross (if you are a bull), when you are jealous… You get the picture.

The resurgence of vinyl in recent years has also seen ever more inventive ways to market it and coloured vinyl has been one such tactic. So our colours night will be dedicated not only to colours but coloured vinyl.

Screen Shot 2018-09-23 at 16.40.57And meeting the brief perfectly is Beck and his most recent album, Colors, which we will be playing in full and in at least two different colours (if you have a copy which isn’t in red or yellow, bring it along). The rest of the evening will be dedicated to records, songs and artists which you have brought along on vinyl and which meet the theme. And if they are on coloured vinyl then of course that’s even better!

Think Purple Rain, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Black Tie White Noise, Orange Crush, Blue Moon, Grey Day, Pink Sunshine, Green Onions, Red Box, Indigo Girls, Brown Eyed Girl, Yellow Magic Orchestra… you get the picture.

Don’t have any vinyl? Don’t worry, bringing records along to Record Club events is definitely not a pre-requisite. Lots of people come along just to listen or catch up with friends. Records or not, you are very welcome.

We start at 8pm upstairs at The Triangle, 47 Bradford Road, Shipley. It’s free to get in and there’s a cash & card bar downstairs with a choice of the finest beers known to mankind (this is not an idle boast). We’ll likely lay on a few Indian snacks too.

See you there!

Saltaire Festival 2018 Pop Ups – Saturday 8th September

It’s Saltaire Festival time again and for the third year running, as part of the opening weekend Open Gardens event, we’ll be popping up around the village asking you to join us playing some fine vinyl.

This year we’ll be at wonderful Edward St Bakery from 9am before moving on to amazing Tambourine Coffee at 1pm and ending up at the excellent YardFest on Upper Ada St for 5pm. Check the poster for locations if you’re not a Saltaire regular.

We always have a laugh at these events and it’s really nice to meet people who come along with a few records to play or just to listen and hang around.

And like last year our massively popular Record Club badges will be available too.

Hope to see you there!

Charity Shop Finds 2 – Saturday 1st September 2018

Charity shop 2 2018_RC

Occasionally we hit on a theme for our events which demand repeating. Charity Shop Finds is one such theme. Last held back in September 2016 we had such a blast we knew we had to do it again. The surprise is that it has taken so long.

The rules are simple. Go to your local charity shop(s), buy some vinyl (the weirder and wackier the better) and come along and play it. The charity benefits and we all have a particularly eclectic evening. For instance, last time we enjoyed Hawaiian Wedding Music, Steel Band Music, Mrs Mills, The Readers Digest Guide to Rock, PiL, Nina Simone, Electric Boogaloo, Noel Coward, Adamski, Boney M, Carly Simon, Geoff Love (& His Orchestra of course), Syd Barrett, Mrs Mills, 808 State… And the much loved Molly O’Day and The Cumberland Mountain Goats.

Join us upstairs at The Triangle from 8pm onwards.

Summertime Sizzlers – Saturday 4th August 2018

Screen Shot 2018-07-31 at 22.33.21

Summer seems to have been here for ages and (phew) what a scorcher it’s turned out to be. It’s like 1976 all over again.

To celebrate this unexpectedly pleasant turn of events (although a little rain would go down well actually) we are going to hold an event in August, something in our 7+ years we have rarely done because of holidays and stuff.

So, our theme this month will be your favourite summertime tunes. On vinyl. And hopefully they won’t melt or warp in the heat. Bring along any vinyl you think meets the criteria (7s, 10s, 12s, singles and LPs…) and play it for the enjoyment of everyone there (or ask someone to do it for you).

Since we moved venues to The Triangle nearly a year ago it’s been great to see so many new faces coming along. If you’ve not been yet please don’t be shy. It’s not a club as such, there’s no membership or anything. We’re just a bunch of folk who enjoy meeting up once a month (and sometimes more) and playing great music on vinyl, having a chat, a few drinks and generally just getting along. Some great friendships have been made at Record Club.

We’ll start spinning the tunes upstairs at 8pm and wrap things up about 11.30pm. There’s plenty of drinks to choose from in The Triangle’s bar downstairs, with excellent advice from Gavin and Andrew if the choice is a little overwhelming (there’s loads!) And there’s often a few free-of-charge Indian snacks to enjoy too.

So what are you waiting for? Slap on the factor 50, don the knotted hanky and join us to play some summertime sizzlers on 4th August.

7 x 7 x 7 – Saturday 7th July 2018

7X7X7_18_RC

We don’t usually need an excuse to repeat some of our most popular nights and looking at the date of this one we knew we couldn’t let it go by.

Waaaay back in November 2016 we held a 7′ singles only night. Seven people playing seven 7″ singles each. 49 singles. We called in 7×7 and it was great.

So, as our next event falls on the 7th July (7/7) we thought it high time to do the night again. Perhaps we should have called it 7x7x7x7x7…?

To keep things fair only those who didn’t take part last time were allowed to step up for this one and it’s great to see some of our more recent Record Clubbers offering to take part.

Here are our Magnificent Seven for 7x7x7…

8.00pm Bart

8.30pm Noel

9.00pm Paul

9.30pm Ant

10.00pm Wendy

10.30pm Tony

11.00pm Anne-Marie

11.30pm Err… The End

Why not come and join us on 7th July. We start at 8pm. We finish 49 singles later at 11.30pm. It’s free entry upstairs at the Triangle (47 Bradford Rd, Shipley) where you can enjoy their extensive bar (cash & card) and we usually provide a few Indian snacks to enjoy along the way.

See you there!

Three of a Kind – 8pm Saturday 5th May 2018

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 20.28.39

Three. It’s the magic number apparently. After the roaring success of Three Little Letters in 2016 we now have Three of a Kind….

It’s simple. Pick three tunes (on vinyl) and bring them along to play on the night. Those three tunes must have something that links them. It might be in the lyrics, a shared performer, an event… anything really. But something which is guessable. Otherwise what’s the point, eh!?

No prizes. Just a bit of fun. And hopefully some very interesting and unexpected tunes. It sort of what Record Club is all about.

It’ll all happen upstairs at The Triangle at 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley from 8pm, where there will also be an excellent selection of drinks to purchase, some of Bradford’s finest Indian snacks to nibble (compliments of Record Club) and an entrance fee of precisely nought pee! Bargain! See you there…

Name On! Saturday 7th April 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-19 at 19.54.40

This April come join the Record Club at The Triangle for an evening of songs named after people… all on lovely vinyl.

For the Beatles it was Michelle, for Dolly Parton it was Jolene, Simon and Garfunkel: Cecilia, Eminem: Stan, ABBA: Fernando and Chiquitita. Bruce Springsteen sang about Mary Queen of Arkansas, Rosalita,  Bobby Jean, The Ghost Of Tom Joad and both Harry and Mary’s Place – Bruce liked a name.

Here Come The Girls – Saturday 3rd March 2018

Girls_RC-2_small

In March it’s the annual International Women’s Day and on Saturday 3rd March Record Club joins in with “Here Come The Girls”, a night dedicated to female artists and female-led groups.

This will be a women-led event to be enjoyed by everyone and along with hearing some fine albums chosen by women from Record Club, as always there’ll be plenty of space for any women attending to play their own female artist choices on vinyl in the free play sections.

It’s free entry and The Triangle run a bar with a huge range of beers, wines and spirits available for purchase. Come and join upstairs at The Triangle in Shipley from 8pm. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Punk’s Not Dead – Saturday 3rd February 2018

Punk1_RC

“The Record Club believe that Punk’s Not Dead and we want you to come and share your memories and records with us.”

When the Sex Pistols collapsed on that fateful tour of the USA in 1978, some proclaimed that Punk was dead. But their brief riot of recordings and gigs was just a blink of the eye in the storm that Punk would eventually become.

The changes in fashion and taste would see the advent of New Wave, Post Punk, Powerpop and other labels dreamt up by the journos of Sounds and NME. The music had changed forever…
