SciFi – Saturday May 4th 2019

May_scifi_RC

Not very long to go, in a galaxy not very far away… This May we will be holding our first ever Sci Fi themed night of vinyl-only tunes. How could we resist on Saturday May the Fourth (Be With You, etc…)

It’s a free play night and never ones to to be too precise about our themes, here at Record Club we welcome a broad interpretation of what Sci Fi means to you. Whether you get your kicks in a galaxy far, far away, consider space the final frontier or find the previous two a sheer affront to the intellectual heights to which serious “SF” can aspire then we want to hear your vinyl choices (yes, you can bring Sarah Brightman’s “Starship Trooper” if you must).

We’ll be setting our phasers to stun from 8pm upstairs at the Triangle for three and half hours of the best, worst or even most indifferent of your Sci Fi choices, with the airlock closing at 11.30pm. To accompany your journey we should highlight that the beers and other drinks available in the Triangle bar are out of this world and we’ll try and lay on a few free Indian snacks to help soak them up.

So, get ready to make the jump for hyperspace to The Triangle in Shipley for a planet-conquering, galaxy-smashing night of vinyl tunes.

Elements – Saturday 6th April 2019

April_elements_RC outlined fonts

For many of us music, records, VINYL in fact are elemental to our existence. A week without a gig, a trip to a record shop or a few hours spent crate digging or clicking (“crate clicking”, I like that one…) is a wasted week.

But apparently there are things even more important to life. Like coffee…. no? Biscuits? Umm… Even more basic? Oh ok. The actual building blocks of life itself…

Ancient Greek brainbox Empedocles thought he had it all figured out when he proposed earth, air, water and fire. Not a bad start and you never heard any complaints from Maurice White and his merry band of funketeers. But science being all science-y decided there were more and before you knew it there’s 118 of the beggars with crazy names like Dubnium, Europium and GOLD!

So we thought why not celebrate all things elemental through the medium of our much-loved vinyl (or polyvinyl chloride as we never call it and which isn’t even an element, pah!). It’s a free play night so there’s no central albums – just bring it and play it. As long as you can tie it back to the theme of ELEMENTS.

On nights like this we easily get through 50+ diverse tracks with lots of polite and friendly chopping and changing at the pre-loved wheels of steel. And if you’re unsure how to work the decks then there is always a friendly face willing to help. Lots of fun, guaranteed.

As usual, our lovely hosts The Triangle will be running the cash & card bar downstairs with some amazing beverage choices, many of them you won’t otherwise find for hundreds of miles. And you can help yourself to some of Bradford’s finest Indian snacks courtesy of Record Club regulars.

So, we’ll see you upstairs at The Triangle, 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley from 8pm until 11.30pm. Elementary!

Saltaire Record & Retro Fair – Saturday 9th March

banner

On Saturday 9th March we are very proud to bring you our first Saltaire Record & Retro Fair! Formerly under the care of the fine folk at Rose & Brown, the Record Club are now the custodians of the district’s finest record fair. Up to 20 stall holders, loads of records and pop & film memorabilia and ephemera to peruse and buy, all with a warm Yorkshire welcome.

You can find us at the Caroline Club on Caroline St., Saltaire. Doors open at 10am and it’s 50p entry. If you’ve been before then you know what to expect. If you haven’t then don’t miss out!

We’re easy to find. Saltaire is on a main train route out of Leeds, Bradford and Skipton and there are loads of buses to and from Bradford serving the top of village, with just a very short walk into the heart of Saltaire. There is limited parking outside the venue and in the Council car park on Caroline St. but as it gets busy n the village it’s wise to use public transport where possible.

And once you’ve finished at the fair you’ll find Saltaire is a great place to saunter around, with a selection of shops, cafes, bars, Robert’s Park and of course the incredible Salts Mill.

Interested in having a stall at a future Record & Retro Fair? Details are on our sister site. We are holding three fairs in 2019, the next two are on Saturdays 13th July and 9th November. Stalls book up quickly so don’t delay if you are interested.

See you there!

American Mavericks – Saturday 2nd March 2019

Print

Our next event is dedicated to the American Maverick – art rocker, lone cowboy, socially conscious punk and genre-defining funkmeister. Darren will be leading this one with an eclectic selection including Arthur Lee & Love, Patti Smith, Fugazi, Sly & The Family Stone and The Residents. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for you to pop on a track or two of your own choosing if you’ve got something you think fits the theme in between chewing your pencil over one of Darren’s legendary quizzes.

We get spinning at 8pm upstair at The Triangle, there’s a cash and card bar downstairs selling the finest drinks known to humanity and we’ll lay on a few (free) Indian snacks to enjoy along the way. Lights out at 11.30pm. Come and join us, we’re a friendly bunch and it’s always nice to meet new people!

Guitar Heroes – Saturday 2nd February 2019

Elvis was the guitar man, Ziggy played guitar, Bryan Adams got his first real six string at the five and dime, Bob Marley was jamming and Joan Jett loved her rock n roll…

This month we celebrate all that is great and good about the guitar and the heroes who provide their unforgettable sound. Six string or twelve (or maybe just four), from blues and acoustic, to rock, jazz and jangly pop – our night of guitar greats promises to be full of unforgettable riffs, rhythms and solos.

Noel is taking charge of this one. The evening will include a side each from two featured albums – Eric Clapton’s ‘Me and Mr Johnson’ (his tribute to the legendary guitarist Robert Johnson) and Joanne Shaw Taylor’s 2016 album ‘Wild’. Joanne is a British blues guitarist who has just been signed by Sony.

Each album will be followed by a short session of linked guitar based tracks. And of course there’ll be plenty of time in between for you to share your favourite guitar-based tunes on vinyl.

We crack on from 8pm upstairs at the Triangle, while downstairs you’ll find a cash/card bar stocking the finest selection of drinks known to mankind.

See you there!

New Year’s Revolutions in Dub – Saturday 5th January 2019

This new year we’re doing our roots, making a copy, stripping everything back and boosting the drums ‘n’ bass…

We’ll be looking at the reggae beginnings and wide reaching influences of dub music. Covering everything from punk, post-punk, drum and bass, techno, big beat and many, many other musical genres.

Plenty of opportunity for free play at this one so bring along your own dub-y vinyl to throw into this eclectic mix.

We kick off at 8pm upstairs at The Triangle, 47 Bradford Road, Shipley. The needle finally comes off the record at 11.30pm.

Home Sweet Home – Saturday 1st December

It’s that time of year again, when you and more than a million others race Chris Rea in a bid to get to that mystical of places, Home.

But before you brave the roads, rails or towpaths, join The Record Club in our own front room to enjoy an evening of vinyl, listening to and playing songs about home, family and everything in between. And as it’s December, the odd Christmas song wouldn’t be frowned upon. Tis the season to be jolly after all. To get you going, we’ll be playing The Family by Satchel in its entirety, but we’re sure Sly will bring his Family Stone, John Lennon will bring his Mother and Depeche Mode will come Home.
