Colours – Saturday 6th October 2018

Colours_RC

Colours, eh. Kind of important. Otherwise, how would we know when to stop, when to go, when your enemy has surrendered, when to get really cross (if you are a bull), when you are jealous… You get the picture.

The resurgence of vinyl in recent years has also seen ever more inventive ways to market it and coloured vinyl has been one such tactic. So our colours night will be dedicated not only to colours but coloured vinyl.

Screen Shot 2018-09-23 at 16.40.57And meeting the brief perfectly is Beck and his most recent album, Colors, which we will be playing in full and in at least two different colours (if you have a copy which isn’t in red or yellow, bring it along). The rest of the evening will be dedicated to records, songs and artists which you have brought along on vinyl and which meet the theme. And if they are on coloured vinyl then of course that’s even better!

Think Purple Rain, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Black Tie White Noise, Orange Crush, Blue Moon, Grey Day, Pink Sunshine, Green Onions, Red Box, Indigo Girls, Brown Eyed Girl, Yellow Magic Orchestra… you get the picture.

Don’t have any vinyl? Don’t worry, bringing records along to Record Club events is definitely not a pre-requisite. Lots of people come along just to listen or catch up with friends. Records or not, you are very welcome.

We start at 8pm upstairs at The Triangle, 47 Bradford Road, Shipley. It’s free to get in and there’s a cash & card bar downstairs with a choice of the finest beers known to mankind (this is not an idle boast). We’ll likely lay on a few Indian snacks too.

See you there!

7 x 7 x 7 – Saturday 7th July 2018

7X7X7_18_RC

We don’t usually need an excuse to repeat some of our most popular nights and looking at the date of this one we knew we couldn’t let it go by.

Waaaay back in November 2016 we held a 7′ singles only night. Seven people playing seven 7″ singles each. 49 singles. We called in 7×7 and it was great.

So, as our next event falls on the 7th July (7/7) we thought it high time to do the night again. Perhaps we should have called it 7x7x7x7x7…?

To keep things fair only those who didn’t take part last time were allowed to step up for this one and it’s great to see some of our more recent Record Clubbers offering to take part.

Here are our Magnificent Seven for 7x7x7…

8.00pm Bart

8.30pm Noel

9.00pm Paul

9.30pm Ant

10.00pm Wendy

10.30pm Tony

11.00pm Anne-Marie

11.30pm Err… The End

Why not come and join us on 7th July. We start at 8pm. We finish 49 singles later at 11.30pm. It’s free entry upstairs at the Triangle (47 Bradford Rd, Shipley) where you can enjoy their extensive bar (cash & card) and we usually provide a few Indian snacks to enjoy along the way.

See you there!

Three of a Kind – 8pm Saturday 5th May 2018

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 20.28.39

Three. It’s the magic number apparently. After the roaring success of Three Little Letters in 2016 we now have Three of a Kind….

It’s simple. Pick three tunes (on vinyl) and bring them along to play on the night. Those three tunes must have something that links them. It might be in the lyrics, a shared performer, an event… anything really. But something which is guessable. Otherwise what’s the point, eh!?

No prizes. Just a bit of fun. And hopefully some very interesting and unexpected tunes. It sort of what Record Club is all about.

It’ll all happen upstairs at The Triangle at 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley from 8pm, where there will also be an excellent selection of drinks to purchase, some of Bradford’s finest Indian snacks to nibble (compliments of Record Club) and an entrance fee of precisely nought pee! Bargain! See you there…

Name On! Saturday 7th April 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-19 at 19.54.40

This April come join the Record Club at The Triangle for an evening of songs named after people… all on lovely vinyl.

For the Beatles it was Michelle, for Dolly Parton it was Jolene, Simon and Garfunkel: Cecilia, Eminem: Stan, ABBA: Fernando and Chiquitita. Bruce Springsteen sang about Mary Queen of Arkansas, Rosalita,  Bobby Jean, The Ghost Of Tom Joad and both Harry and Mary’s Place – Bruce liked a name.

Punk’s Not Dead – Saturday 3rd February 2018

Punk1_RC

“The Record Club believe that Punk’s Not Dead and we want you to come and share your memories and records with us.”

When the Sex Pistols collapsed on that fateful tour of the USA in 1978, some proclaimed that Punk was dead. But their brief riot of recordings and gigs was just a blink of the eye in the storm that Punk would eventually become.

The changes in fashion and taste would see the advent of New Wave, Post Punk, Powerpop and other labels dreamt up by the journos of Sounds and NME. The music had changed forever…

Review of 2017 – Saturday 2nd December

The next Record Club looks back at the records that have rocked your world in 2017.

What are your favourite albums or tracks of the year? Which artists did you discover? Who did you see live this year.

And don’t restrict yourself to just “new” stuff. Perhaps you discovered a classic album for the first time. Or finally got round to listening to (and loving) that band that everyone has been banging on about for years.

If you have some vinyl which meets any of the above criteria, then come and play it at the last Record Club event of 2017.

The review of the year starts at 8pm at The Triangle (47 Bradford Rd, Shipley), our new home and purveyors of beer, art and curiosities.

See you there!

Northern Soul Night. Friday 3rd November 8pm

Come and join us for a night of Northern Soul at The Triangle – 47 Bradford Road, Shipley BD18 3DS.

<Please note our new date for this event – FRIDAY 3rd November – not Saturday as previously advertised.>

Anne-Marie has seized control of the decks for this one, promising a scintillating set of dancfloor classics.

But she’ll leave some space during the evening for you to play some of your own Northern Soul or NS – inspired tracks, so make sure you bring some vinyl.

We’ll be set up and ready to go by 8pm. Top tunes, a fine selection of drinks and some excellent company. What a way to start the weekend!

Oktoberfest! Saturday 7th October 2017

oktoberfest bear

After several successful years in the Kirkgate Centre (many thanks again guys!), Record Club is changing venues to The Triangle with our first regular evening on Saturday 7th October from 8pm.

It’s open to all with no charge and we were looking for a suitably rousing theme to kick us off. Well, the nights are drawing in and leaves are beginning to fall to the ground, so it must be autumn and that can only mean… Oktoberfest!

Aches & Pains – Saturday 27th May 2017

AchesNpains_may

This theme has been sat in the waiting area of our to do list for a while and it’s finally time to take it into the operating theatre. So, nice and simply – medically themed records, artists, songs, albums, etc., etc. Doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, medicine (good or bad), cures, symptoms, ailments, prescriptions, coughs, colds, hearts (ache-y and indeed break-y)…

We’ll have at least one featured album and will update the website once we know what it will be (hint – there are a lot of Cure albums available). BUT there will of course be lots of room for free play so make sure you bring your own stuff along to play on the pre-loved decks and MASSIVE speakers. Be as tenuous as you like but we’re sure there are plenty to choose from.

So, come and join us on Saturday 27th May. We’re at the Kirkgate Centre, 8pm, finishing at 11.30pm. Beers and snacks are available from the well stocked cash/card bar. Excellent company. with just a £3 on the door donation to help us cover our costs.

See you there!

Pop Up at The Triangle with Bob Stanley – Friday 28th April 2017

triangle1_2_purple

Our April event finds us on the road again (alright, around the corner) and back at The Triangle in Shipley. They are celebrating their 2nd birthday and have asked The Record Club to pop up on Friday 28th April.

Bob and PeteAfter the fine time we had back in February (and September last year) how could we say no! This time around we are very pleased to welcome Bob Stanley from the very excellent St Etienne, (pictured left with bandmate Pete Wiggs) who will be providing a DJ set during the evening.

For the rest of the night the turntables are open to free play. But it’s free play with a difference. For those interested in playing some of their own tunes we’ll break the rest of the evening down into short sets, a bit like we did with our 7×7 night. If you’d like a spot (around 20 mins) then do get in touch beforehand and we will do our very best to allocate you some time. It’ll be more or less first come first served, so please do get in touch before the night itself if you are interested. The list is already growing.

Just want to be there and chat / listen / dance? That’s cool too!

As it’s a pop up there is no entry donation. If you don’t know about The Triangle (where have you been??) they class themselves as a “Bottle Shop/Art Gallery/Record & Curiosity Shop/Coffee & Cake Specialist” and “selling the finest beers known to humanity”. Which we think is a fair description. Non-beers are also available to purchase of course.

You can find The Triangle at 47 Bradford Rd, Shipley BD18 3DS. Things kick off at 8ish and finish no later than midnight. Hope to see you there!
