Ah! The East, the mysterious East!
Many Western musicians seem to have had a great fascination for the unique sounds of the East: the “strange” instruments, the unusual scales and bending notes, the complex time signatures.
A fair number has sought to incorporate these sounds into their music to make it seem more distinctive, unusual or exotic. Think of Brian Jones’ and George Harrison’s use of the sitar in the 1960’s and Michael Brook’s collaborations with Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. More recently musicians like Fourtet have used samples of Eastern music to extend their sounds and artists like Bjork have handed over their music to be remixed and built on by Arabic singers.
And of course the traffic is not just one way. Lots of non-western musicians are also creating hybrids between their traditional and new music that make it difficult to pin down just what “Eastern” or “Western” music really is.
This month we invite you to dig into your collection to find any uses of the exotic East, be it from the Indian subcontinent, the Far East of China and Japan or the closer Middle East. We’ll be playing some of Sarathy Korwar’s recent LP “More Arriving”, an exciting synthesis of Indian rhythms, jazz, rap and spoken word. The rest of the time will be freeplay which will give you all the chance to show some of the more exotic corners of your collections.
