Space – 28th February, 2015, 8pm, at the Kirkgate Centre

Space

**Updated with voting buttons 22 Feb**
As Ballboy once sang Space is brilliant! It’s so vast above our heads, such a place to marvel, to be inspired by – and so silent.

Space is also something we see around us every day back on terra firma. It’s what’s immediately around us. It what’s in our heads.

The possibilities of space are limitless.

We would like to try and have a Record Club that covers that breadth, that marvel – and unlike space, people feel they can just go to it….

One of the records will be Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by Spiritualised. It’s a wonderful record that is sometimes stigmatised by strong drug associations. For me it’s a record that take you right into another person’s headspace. It is full of lovelorn psychedelia and soulful celebration, a really unique atmosphere.

The second album will be… well, I said space and the marvel of it so it has to be… Awesome Mix Volume 1 from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s a great collection of tunes from a great space film.

Except I want to get hold the album differently. Buying the album on vinyl would cost a fortune – and may not arrive in time. I also remember a lot of my youth was about mix tapes – and singles rather than albums (because: pocket money).

So, I’m going to try and hunt down as many of the songs from the album as I can – as 7 inch records. I’m going to scour record fairs and record shops during February. I’ve set up a publicly accessible Google Doc so people can see my progress. And if any attendees of Record Club have a track or two themselves, maybe they’d like to lend them for a play (and reduce my hunt by one less record). Just let me know!

Scrap that – I’ve gone and got Guardians of the Galaxy on vinyl!

The third album – well, I’d like the good folk of the Record Club to put forward their suggestions, and we’ll put it to a vote.

**UPDATE**: The people have spoken and the suggestions plus voting buttons are now on this page. Go on! VOTE!

Any any space in-between all that? Free play! Even Scouse pop tunesters Space will be allowed!

  1. Public Service Broadcasting “The Race For Space” – I’ve a copy on order, due on 24th February! And surely we should be able to have some Sun Ra, the guy claimed to have been born on Saturn…
